Seashells: The Kawai Collection
My fascination with seashells began at a very young age; I acquired my first specimen at a neighbourhood childrens party when I was four years old. In spite of the fact that Montreal has to be one of the worst places to develop such a hobby (no local fauna and few collectors), I managed to slowly grow my collection, taking advantage of any opportunity to obtain specimens. Every vacation to the seaside included a search for dealers and opportunities to collect.
With time, my fascination with shells became much more than a pass time; seashells quickly became an integral part of my artistic life, influencing all aspects of my creative process. In studying the complex patterns which adorn many species, I came to an understanding of the ‘ordered chaos’ which governs the precise manner in which pigments are laid down onto the shell. This notion is key to many of my mobile designs.
The intricate patterns found in many families of mollusks, notably Cone snails, have themselves been subjects of my two-dimensional work for decades. These works are an unusual mix of abstract and hyperrealist art. I continue to explore these designs for which my collection has become a priceless resource.
I will post photos of some of my choice specimens and hope you will enjoy seeing these masterpieces amongst Nature’s many wonderful creations.
